Towards an Invisible Dance is a new line of theoretical and practical research in which I explore notions of experiential dance and accessibility in collaboration with other dancers and choreographers to transform their repertoire pieces into more accessible versions, based on the creation of new invisible versions.

The project aims to offer quality sensory dance experiences created especially for people with low vision or blindness, but also for all those who want to experience dance on equal terms with people with non-normative vision: through the rest of their senses, in their own bodies, not only as a cognitive experience but also a fully sensual one. I do not focus on creating an audio description for the pieces but on returning to their essence, to their most primal form, to their original desire from which to generate a new piece as a total experience.

A first phase of the project (2023-2024) culminated in the creation of the piece Fronterizas Invisible, a new version of Mari Paula’s original work, Fronterizas.

About Fronterizas Invisible:

In our language, the prefix [in-] denotes denial or deprivation, but it also means ‘inside’ or ‘interior.’ We play with this double meaning to highlight that the denial of the visible is also an invitation to delve into other ways of seeing. Because darkness is not the absence of perception but a different mode of seeing.

Fronterizas Invisible is a non-visual version of the original piece “Fronterizas” by choreographer and dancer Mari Paula, and the first piece in this series. Premiered at the 2024 BAD Bilbao Festival, Fronterizas Invisible is a call to contemplate dance without seeing it, to feel it through one’s own body, to pursue it through our mental images triggered by the rest of our senses.
